Common Questions.

Solar PhotoVoltaics (PV) is the technology which converts light into electricity. Using semiconducting materials, a photovoltaic system employs solar modules, each comprising a number of solar cells, which generate electrical power.

Solar Power has specific advantages as an energy source:

  • low cost
  • zero-carbon
  • low maintenance (no moving parts)
  • modular

SolarShare’s comprehensive SolarSurvey is designed to take you through the process of sizing the optimum solar PV system to maximize solar electricity generation for the size of your roof, its orientation to the sun, and your average annual electricity consumption.

A SolarShare system, depending on your configuration, will typically consist of the following components:

  • Solar PV panels, 6-18 (up to a max of 7kWp)
  • An inverter, to convert DC electricity to AC (up to 6kVA)
  • A battery, typically starting at 5kWh and expanding up to 15kWh and beyond

Solar PV panels typically have a design life of over 25 years. Product warranties are typically 12 years, with a linear performance warranty of 30 years, depending on the manufacturer.

Inverters have a design life of 10 to 20 years depending on the manufacturer. Product warranties are 10 years and up.

Batteries have a design life based on charge/discharge cycles which range from 5000 to 10000, with a time-based limit of 10 years usually applying. Depending on the manufacturer, the battery will be warrantied to have from 60% to 80% of its capacity after 10 years, but can be expected to continue operating after that.

When solar power is created, it must be used immediately, otherwise your unused electricity will spill over to the grid. To avoid spilling your excess electricity to the grid, a battery is needed. A battery stores excess solar electricity generated for use later in the day.

You will of course now get paid for any electricity you export to the grid so even if you do not have a battery you will still benefit from the electricity you generate but do not use immediately.

The key information on the form is your Eircode. We use that to find your house on Google Maps.

This gives us a view of your roof. This allows us to:

  • See the size of your roof so we calculate how many panels can be installed.
  • We can see if any part of your roof is in shade. The less shade the better.
  • We can see how your roof is orientated to the sun.


We take this information and input it into some sophisticated software we have. This will tell us how much electricity it is possible to generate on your roof.  

Using this & the information you supply regarding your current electricity spend we can calculate how much you will save on your electricity bills. 

We do not investigate only 1 scenario.  We will bring you information based on different panel configurations and how the numbers work with or without a battery.

This part of the survey is followed by a consultation with you. Together, based on your budget and ambitions for any solar system you have installed we come up with the configuration that works best for you.

This approach takes a bit of time, often can stretch past 1 phone call. The effort involved reflects the fact that this is a significant purchase on your behalf.

As of February of 2022 the legislation has been passed in The Dáil that allows for the payment of what is called the Feed In Tariff for excess power generated by your panels.

By the end of August 2022 most companies will declare how much they are going to offer to their customers who via their solar panels send electricity back into the grid.  So far the following prices have been announced , Pinergy will pay 13.5c per kWh, SSE Airtricity & Electric Ireland will pay 14c per kWh, Energia will pay 18c per kWh and Bord Gais will pay 18.5c per kWh. Flogas come out on top paying 20c per kWh.
